Radio 1812
When the Virtual World Makes Migrants’ Voices Real
International Migrants Day
18th of December 2009
Radio 1812 is an event organised by December 18, a Brussels–based international resource center on the Human Rights of Migrant Workers.
Every year on the 18th of December, Radio 1812 brings together as many radio stations as possible worldwide to celebrate International Migrants Day.
Radios are asked to produce and broadcast programmes on 18th December and to share this content online by uploading their audio contributions on the Radio 1812 website after their own air-waves broadcast.
Radio 1812 is the result of a reflection by the December 18 team on the impact and potential of International Migrants Day. Whilst the day was designated by the UN in 2000, few countries and organizations participated and the Day itself is not that well known, even amongst migrant organizations themselves.
It was to address this that December 18 decided to launch the project.
It is a global event that brings together migrant groups and radios from around the world to produce, broadcast and share programs celebrating the achievements and highlighting the concerns of migrants worldwide.
Radio1812’s Mission: To raise awareness of International Migrants Day
Radio1812’s Goals:
1: To increase awareness of migrants’ issues globally through the use of radio on International Migrants Day.
2: To promote International Migrants Day as an opportunity for celebration, reflection and debate around migrants’ issues both at international and local level
Radio 1812’s Communication Objectives:
* To use Radio 1812 to promote the rights of migrants during International Migrants Day (18th December) to a global audience
* To put the spotlight on the issue’s of interests to migrants to a global audience
* To celebrate migrants’ achievements and successes with migrants communities
* To build solidarity amongst migrants community worldwide
* To present the realities of migrants’ variety of experiences to radio audiences locally and globally (i.e. through FM/AM and on-line)
* To raise awareness of Radio1812 as the global platform for audio content, sharing, dialogue, debate and exchange to the relevant professional communities
* To raise awareness of the Radio1812 project in the context of solidarity across the migrants rights, human rights and communications sectors
* To raise awareness of the activities in the run up to and during 18th December globally through Radio1812 to migrant communities and radio communities and their related audiences.
The Role of the Website is Many Folds:
to be a place for sharing, specifically audio content, as most radios do forfeit their programme ownership to share their content on that specific day with other radios and with audiences online.
Indeed it would be impossible for us to make the radio event tangible and alive if there was not one place where we could store what goes out on air and for our audiences to go to. The virtual makes the on-air real!
The website was relaunched in the autumn of 2009. It runs on a fully multilingual platform – based on Drupal - and is available in 5 languages: French, Spanish, English, Dutch and Italian.
