Alexandrina World Music Festival 2010

Europe - Mediterranean

Bibliotheca Alexandrina, Alexandria, Egypt, April 23 - 28, 2010

The Alexandrina World Music Festival
is an international festival celebrating world music from Europe and the Mediterranean taking place each April in Alexandria (Egypt). It is organized by the Bibliotheca Alexandrina Arts Center.

Groups from Europe and the Mediterranean are invited to participate, bringing new ideas and inspiration for local artists and audiences, as well as developing artistic collaboration and exchange.

This year the Bibliotheca Alexandrina received 161 applications from 26 different countries. Groups from Portugal, Croatia, Romania, Moldova, Cyprus, France, Italy and Malta are selected to participate. The festival will take place in the BA open-air theater during the period from 23-26 April 2010.

Besides the diversity of performances that will sway the BA Plaza, the Arts Center aims at organizing two additional programs to provide opportunities for local talents, and to ensure the sustainability of the Festival’s outcomes.

DIVERSITY PROGRAM
Participating groups come from diverse cultural backgrounds. World music is the one unifying aspect. The festival will expose all participants to a one-day WORKSHOP with local groups. Participants will exchange their musical experience and fuse their diverse cultural backgrounds to produce one output created through merging different musical traditions. We call this the DIVERSITY program. Since cultures are diverse, music can be the means of unity within diversity.

This Program will promote and highlight the importance of interaction between musicians and artists from different cultural backgrounds (Europe and the Mediterranean). Musicians will have new access to live performances of diverse world music heritage. They will also have the chance to develop new models of music practices in a meaningful way and an atmosphere where diversity is appreciated.
