The Institute for Cultural Diplomacy (ICD)
About the ICD
Founded in 1999, The Institute for Cultural Diplomacy is an international, not-for-profit, non-governmental organisation with headquarters in the United States and Germany.
As one of Europe's leading organisations in the field of cultural exchange, the ICD is at the centre of a global network of independent partners in both the public and private sectors. Our collective mission is to enhance the process of international and interregional human interaction by improving the very fabric of social relations.
The ICD´s research and programmes in the area of cultural communication and rapprochement offer viable alternatives to enhance traditional diplomatic policy. This can benefit individuals, communities, and organisations at the local, national, regional, and global level.
The ICD´s Philosophy
The ICD understands that in an increasingly globalised world, in which people are able to travel and exchange information faster than ever before, there is a growing interdependency between nations. As a result, successful inter-cultural interaction will undoubtedly become a major challenge for international relations in the 21st century.
The ICD believes that inter- and intra-cultural relations can be strengthened and maintained through dialogue. This leads to a better understanding and greater trust between cultures, in the long term leading to more peaceful relations.
This philosophy is the foundation of all of the work that we do and we take as our motivation the countless examples throughout the world of peaceful and constructive interaction between different cultures, at all levels.
The ICD´s Goal
The Institute for Cultural Diplomacy’s ultimate goal is to enable, enhance and sustain inter- and intra- cultural dialogue between different cultures. This is with the view to creating constructive, sustainable relationships which will prevent misunderstanding, improve communication and cooperation and help to reduce the likelihood of socio-cultural conflicts.
The ICD´s Role
The ICD sees the role of researching, promoting and developing the field of cultural diplomacy as an integral part of its mission. The field of cultural diplomacy today includes a diverse array of actors; individuals, private organizations, private sector firms, civil society organizations and public sector institutions. We endeavour to optimize and increase the level of cooperation and partnership between the different institutions and organisations working in the field of cultural diplomacy.
Governmental organizations, NGOs and individuals alike can benefit from the potential of cultural diplomacy to improve positive relations based on mutual understanding, dialogue and trust. The ICD aims to apply this foundation of research, gathered through various symposia, academies and forums, to these organizations.
